EY’s Global Code of Conduct provides the ethical framework for everyone in EY’s global organization. It covers the ethical actions that EY prefers between colleagues; employees and clients. It also covers the professional integrity, EY’s objectivity and independence, and intellectual capita protection. This framework is supervising people in EY to respond to any ethical issues in a manner that reflect their values in action.

In the first category; Working with one another, EY emphasizes the idea of shared values and goals. In such way, people can build trust and commitment to do the right thing in an open, host and multi- cultural environment. The other function of this environment is that it not only minimizes any forms of discrimination, intimidation, and harassment, but also maximizes good qualities from people, like integrity, respect, teaming, quality service, individual development, etc.

The second category, Working with clients and others, demonstrates EY’s determination on upholding its professional standards and rules applicable to them. This indicates that on one hand, EY treats its clients professionally with respect, but on the other hand, it also protects its employees from any undue pressure, threaten, and unethical, illegal business practices. To better serve EY’s clients and the society, its employee also have to work with regulators to ensure the rules and standards meet the needs of the market.

The third category, Acting with professional integrity, EY asks its employees to comply government’s laws, regulations, and standards; and EY’s policies and procedures. Because of the difficulties for employees to remember all these rules, EY introduces ethics hotlines for them to deal with sensitive ethical issues. In such case, EY’s employees can learn the rules by consulting experts through the hotlines. This is referred as Culture of Consultation.

The fourth category, Maintaining our objectivity and independence, is another way to demonstrate EY’s professional responsibilities. EY asks its employees to treat everything related to their works professionally, which includes employ professional skepticism, reject any unethical and illegal practices, and manage to resolve any conflicts of interest. Most importantly, EY believes that being independent is sometimes more rigorous than professional and legal requirements because of the constant rejections to clients or others.

The last category, Respecting intellectual capita, shows that EY respects the privacy of personal and confidential information obtained from business. EY forbids people in the organization to use these confidential information for personal gain. EY’s Code of Conduct also indicates that the organization takes proactive measures to safeguard the documents, computers, and other data devices that contain personal or confidential information.

At the end of the Code of Conduct, EY provides employees with eight questions that may help them to determine the appropriate way to act if they are facing any difficult issues. These questions guide employees to recall the content from Code of Conduct and consult colleagues or related departments if necessary.

EY’s Global Code of Conduct has provide its employees comprehensive ethical standards. However, two suggestions is going to perfect the code and serve EY’s employees better;

Firstly, some examples of common ethical issues should be added to the EY’s Global Code of conduct for employees to better understand the content. When emergencies happen, consulting hotlines is not always the best option to quickly respond to the situation. Employees are better to know well about the content before such situation happens than apply what they think is ethically right at the moment.

Secondly, Some content in the Code of Conduct are closely related to EY’s policies. EY should provide related policy links or policy section numbers after the content, to direct employees to specific policies where detailed information are provided. This method connects information together for employees to know well about what they should and shouldn’t do.
