understand how the subnet mask works

Hi there, 

I would like to understand how the subnet mask works? if I need to subnet a an ip address in 4 subnets, 8 subnets, 16 subnets

I think it is the explanation below but I am not sure:

  • Subnet mask if it is a 4 equal subnet I need to borough 2 bits ( if you look at the table above 2 bits is equal 192 / 26)
  • Subnet mask if it is a 8 equal subnet I need to borough 3 bits ( if you look at the table above 3 bits is equal 224 / 27)
  • Subnet mask if it is a 16 equal subnet I need to borough 4 bits ( if you look at the table above 3 bits is equal 240 / 28)

I also attached a file I would like to know if the last column that is the subnet mask in each ip address is correct. If is not correct I would like an explanation to how to find the subnet mask for each equal subnets (4,8 or 16)

I also think that the columns highlighed in red are wrong.
