A ram-jet engine is fitted to a small aircraft that cruises at Mach 4 at an altitude where the pressure is 30 kPa and the temperature is –45°C. The air entering the engine is slowed to subsonic velocities by passing it through two oblique shock waves each of which turn the flow through 15° and by then passing it through a normal shock wave. Following the normal shock, the flow is isentropically decelerated to Mach 0.1 before it enters the combustion zone. Find the values of the pressure and the temperature at the inlet to the combustion zone. What values would have been attained if initial deceleration had been through a single normal shock wave instead of through the combination of oblique shocks and a normal shock?
