headlight circuit

For current to flow through the headlight circuit of Figure 1.2 on page 7, should the switch be open or closed? In the fluid- flow analogy for the circuit, would the valve corresponding to the switch be open or closed? What state for a valve, open or closed, is analogous to an open switch?
