A brass sleeve is fitted over a steel bolt (see figure), and the nut is tightened until it is just snug. The bolt has a diameter of 25 mm, and the sleeve has inside and outside diameters of 26 mm and 36 mm, respectively. Calculate the temperature rise ∆T that is required to produce a stress in the sleeve of 25 MPa compression. (Use material properties as follows: for brass, αb = 20 X 10-6/°C and Eb = 100 GPa; for steel, αX = 12 x 10-6/°C and Es = 200 GPa.)
