It is possible to see the effect of individual observations dynamically by using one of the available Java applets. As of this writing there are several such applets available on the Internet. One of these is given at the following URL: http://gsbwww.uchicago.edu/fac/robert.mcculloch/research /teachingApplets/Leverage/index.html. Another one is available at http://www.stat.sc.edu/∼west/javahtml/Regression.html. Use one of these two applets to show what happens when the rightmost point is moved up or down. Then show what happens when a point near the center, in terms of the x-coordinate, is moved up and down. Explain why the effects differ.
