Light-emitting diodes

Consider Example 14.1 on LEDs. Do you think a normal distribution would generally be a viable model for such applications? Why or why not?

Example 14.1

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are part of the move toward brighter and more efficient lights. Assume that a system consists of two different types of LEDs, one whose lifetime is believed to be about 12,000 hours with a standard deviation of 900 hours and to be (approximately) normally distributed, and for the other LED a normal distribution with a mean of 11,000 hours and a standard deviation of 800 hours is believed to provide a good fit. (The question of whether or not a normal distribution would seem to be a viable model for this application is addressed in Exercise 14.29.)
