Assume normality and that there has been a 1.6σx increase in the process mean. If -chart limits were computed using known parameter values:

 

(a) How many points would we expect to have to plot on the X-chart before observing one that is above the UCL?

(b) If an -chart with subgroups of size n = 4 were used instead of an -chart, how many points would we expect to observe before seeing a point above the UCL on the X-chart?

(c) Compare your answers and explain why your answer to part (b) is smaller than your answer to part (a).

(d) Are your answers to (a) and (b) parameter-change ARLs or not? Explain.
