Predicted Grade Index

Many, if not most, colleges and universities use regression analysis to predict what a student’s four-year GPA would be and use this predicted value as one factor in reaching a decision as to whether or not to accept an applicant. Georgia Tech has been one such university, and in the mid-1980s they used a Predicted Grade Index (PGI) as an aid in reaching decisions. The regression equation, using their notation, was PGI = −0.75 + 0.4 GPA + 0.002(SAT-M) + 0.001(SAT-V). (Source: Student newspaper; of course, “GPA” in the equation represents high school GPA.) Bearing in mind that this was before the recentering of the SAT scores and also before grade inflation, answer the following:

(a) What is the largest possible value of PGI?

(b) Considering your answer to part (a) and any knowledge that you might have of the school, for what approximate range of actual college GPA values would you expect the fit to be the best?

(c) Similarly, for what range of values of the predictors (roughly) would you expect the equation to be useful, and could we determine the set of possible values of the predictors for which the equations could be used?
