salaries of chemical engineers

In a study that involved the salaries of chemical engineers, the following information is available, through July 1, 2000 (Source: Webcam):

This is how the data were reported.

(a) Would you suggest any changes? In particular, what is meant by “mean average salary”? Is that the same as “average salary”? Explain.

(b) Can you estimate σ from these data using the range approach even though ranges are not explicitly given? Explain.

(c) Assume that you wanted to use a Stage 1 control chart approach to analyze these data so as to try to identify any companies that are unusual in terms of the variability of their salaries, as well as their average salaries. Could any of the control charts presented in this chapter be used for this purpose? Why or why not? Could this be accomplished if you had the entire data set and you sampled from that set? If so, how would you perform the sampling?
