The technology that would be beneficial for my Sensory Comfort room project are multi-sensory equipment such as such as soothing lights & sound effects, mirrors, bubble tubes, fibre optic multi-colored strands, soft mattresses/gaming chair, music and aromatic oils to help mental health clients develop communication and physical skills, build friendships and increase confidence. The power of communications to improve the world we operate in and to help mentally challenged individuals achieve their potential. It can also help with the development of emotional responses and improve basic numeracy and literacy skills. The rooms can also significantly support clients with sensory impairment in helping enhance development of senses such as hearing, sight, smell and touch. I only plan to implement and make use of the soft mattress/gaming chair and music using a blue tooth headphone device because it’s the simplest and safest equipment to use on the type of population we have in the unit. Unfortunately due to budget constraints and safety concerns in the acuity of the unit, the other tools and equipment will be impossible to use. Certain things and equipment are considered contraband in the behavioral department most especially the inpatient psychiatric unit obtaining permission of use requires approval from upper management. Cords and electronic devices are considered contraband because patient’s can potentially use it to hurt themselves or other patients. Aromatic oils are contraband because patient may potentially ingest them with the intent to kill themselves.
