The criminal justice system in a country is based on a trial by jury

Introduction The criminal justice system in a country is based on a trial by jury. Defendants are examined before a judge and a 12-person jury in one of 42 Regional Courts, which are located in many of the major towns and cities of the country. Each Regional Court has up to six courtrooms, which are used to review individual cases. A larger Central Court in the country’s capital city reviews appeals from people who believe that they have been wrongly convicted of a crime, and also makes judgements on cases that the Regional Courts cannot

Court Service information systems Information systems are available within each court, providing details on: Statute and case law. These databases are updated each week as the country’s government enacts new laws and the decisions in cases from all other courts are received.

Court organisation schedules. These include lists of judges, jurors and court officials who will be present in court on any given day, along with details of the cases that will be heard in each courtroom.

Fixed asset register. This contains details of the assets under the control and ownership of the court.

Salary information relating to court officials. Note that the Central Court pays all judges. Whereas the information systems in each Regional Court provide similar information, the actual method of processing is very different from court to court. Existing systems vary from complex manual systems to various types of database and management information systems. Any revisions to the system are likely to be expensive because the vast majority of courts do not have computers with a sufficiently high specification to run the latest software. The system is run by a Court Administrator in each Regional Court.
