emergency management

• The topic must be related to a disaster / emergency management • Your paper will analyze, synthesize and evaluate information • You have to cite scholarly papers and resources to support your topic • Cite the sources no matter how you use them even if you paraphrase • You should use APA guidelines but keep it single spaced, 4000 words/10 pages’ish unless you can make your point sooner than that • Quote stuff but don’t only make your paper quotes he’ll be annoyed • At least 10 references, 5 have to be scholarly or government publications, the other 5 must be well known and respected such as government, think tank, or professional associations or accredited websites o Gather information from sources such as academic journals, books, publications o Conduct interviews with subject matter experts, you can interview dad that would count as an expert interview o Collect data for analysis whether through surveys (no) observations (maybe…)or experiments (no) • The thesis should be focused and suitable for you to evaluate information gathered in your research and coherently analyze that information. The Department of the Interior in partnership with private industry has maintained a facility specifically designed to test and train first responders to oil spill disasters. This facility was used to develop, modify, and perfect all of the successful dispersants, booms, and burn technology used during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in April 2010. My paper will demonstrate how the government and private industry improved technologies and diminished the spread and impact of the oil leaked when the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded and sank in the Gulf of Mexico.

Research Paper Assignment

Introduction

You are to research a topic and write a scholarly paper that is due no later than the end of Week 7.

Here you will find information on these topics:
  • Academic Integrity
  • Learning Objectives
  • Milestones and General Instructions
  • Document File Specifications
  • Topic Choices
  • Content Specifications
  • Statement Attesting to Original Work
  • Grading Rubric (where to find it)

Academic Integrity

With this assignment, as with all others, you must adhere to UMUC policies regarding academic integrity. Avoid plagiarism, both intentional and inadvertent, and provide accurate documentation and attribution of the work of others. UMUC's policy recommends "carefully following accepted scholarly practices. Notes taken for papers and research projects should accurately record sources of material to be cited, quoted, paraphrased or summarized, and papers and research projects should acknowledge these sources in references." (Policy 150.25 - Academic Dishonesty and Plagiarism).

You must also include in your submitted documents a statement attesting that you are submitting work that is original and that complies with standards for academic honesty.  See below for specifications.

The work you submit will be evaluated using the services of Turnitin.com.  It is advisable that, in advance of final submission, you also check your paper by using Turnitin.com.  UMUC's Virtual Academic Integrity Laboratory (VAIL) also offers services to help you avoid plagiarism.  The VAIL Web site is http://www.umuc.edu/cip/vail/home.html.

Learning Objectives

Through successful completion of this assignment, you will:
  • Devise and execute a research strategy to produce a quality, graduate-level research paper.
  • Use the electronic UMUC library resources effectively and integrate sources in support of your research position.
  • Analyze, synthesize, and evaluate elements of the topic.
  • Present the information clearly and logically in a well-documented research paper.

Milestones and General Instructions

1.  Select your topic.
On or before: Sunday, October 2 (end of Week 4, but earlier is better)

Post:  To the Conference labeled Declare Your Research Topic. Topics are subject to the approval of the instructor.  Do not post a document.

2.  Submit the final paper.
On or before: Sunday, October 23 (end of Week 7) no later than 11:59:59 PM US Eastern Time.

Post:  To the Assignments Folder labeled Research. Attach a document that is named in the format First Initial + Last Name + Paper for example: NKlaszPaper.

While late assignments will be accepted, you will not receive full credit for them.  I deduct 1 point for each day the assignment is late.

Reminder:  The Workbook is an area where you can create drafts and outlines.  If you would like some interim feedback, you can submit your research strategy, your outline, or drafts for me to take a look at.  Please notify me by Private Messaging in WebTycho or by e-mail if you want me to look at something in the Workbook because WebTycho does not notify me when a student submits something.  [Tip:  Click Submit so I can see the document.  Clicking Save does only that -- saves the document on the server; it does not post it to me.]

Document File Specifications

The document must be a Microsoft Word .doc or docx file or a rich text format (.rtf) file.  Other file formats are not acceptable.  If your paper is supported by diagrams or charts or statistics, please incorporate them into the document in an appropriate place, whether in the body or in an appendix.

Topic Choices and Scholarly Research

You may choose from one of the topic areas listed below, or you may suggest your own topic. The topic must clearly relate to business continuity or disaster / emergency management.  I need to approve the choices, so the earlier you select, the better.

When selecting a topic, keep in mind that the heart of your paper will analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information.   A topic that addresses the application of concepts, for example, would be too shallow.

You are also expected to use scholarly publications in support of your topic (part of your research strategy).  That means searching UMUC's online library databases for your sources.  In other words, do not use search engines such as Google as your primary means to find sources. I discourage you from relying on sources such as Wikipedia or vendor-provided information (unless, for example, you are comparing and contrasting vendors' claims).

The topic areas listed here are high-level, and you will need to narrow your choice through your thesis statement. Or, you may propose your own topic.
  • Managing emergencies and disasters, emergency operations centers, or emergency management systems
  • Prevention of emergencies and disasters
  • Prevention or detection of business crises
  • Response or recovery strategies for either disasters or business crises
  • Testing and training for disasters or crises
  • Government and private partnerships for emergency management
  • Communications during disasters or crises
  • Technological disasters

Specifications for the Research Paper

The contents of the paper are:
  • Title page
  • Main body (see below)
  • Bibliography/References
  • (OPTIONAL) Appendices for figures, tables, etc.
  • Statement attesting to original work (see below)
Follow the APA guidelines, with the exception that the document should be single-spaced, with double spacing between paragraphs.

Good papers clearly present your research findings and analyze and assess those findings. At the graduate school level, you need to do more than report on your research; you must evaluate the significance, potential impacts, and ramifications of the issue at hand.  Where appropriate, you should also critique information you found in the sources you used. End your paper with a meaningful conclusion section.  Conclusions summarize your evaluation of the topic or show how you proved your thesis statement. Conclusions do not present new information!

The body of the paper should be a minimum of 4,000 words, or approximately 10 single-spaced pages. These are guidelines, not absolute requirements.  If you can brilliantly present an idea in 3,500 words, that is acceptable.  If you exceed 4,000 words because you have significant analysis to present, that is fine.  What is not acceptable is excessive verbiage straying off topic or consituting "fluff."

Support all statements of facts, assertions, and conclusions with credible sources. Cite the source, whether you are summarizing, paraphrasing, or quoting directly.  Follow the APA guidelines for quoting sources. If the quote is less than 40 words, use quotation marks. If the quote is longer than 40 words, use an indented paragraph set off from the rest of the text.  Please note that only a limited amount of material can be quoted, summarized, or paraphrased from sources. You are to provide original analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of information. If more than 15% of your paper is quoted, it will be subject to additional scrutiny.  I evaluate the quoted material to determine if it carries your analysis forward (good!) or if you are using it in place of your own critical thinking (bad!).

You must cite at least 10 references.  Of the 10 or more references, you must rely on and cite a minimum of 5 scholarly or government publications, such as articles from academic journals or books or scholarly Web sites.  You should search the UMUC Library databases for journals or government documents.  You must also include 5 or more references from other well-respected sources, such as government, think tank, or professional association publications or Web sites.

Finally, you must also incorporate on a separate page at the end of the document a statement attesting to original work.  See the next section for the full statement.

Statement Attesting to Original Work

You must also submit the following statement with your personal attestation on a separate page at the end of the document:

"This paper, examination, report, or the section thereof for which I have indicated responsibility, is my own work. Any assistance I received in its preparation is acknowledged within the report or examination, in accordance with academic practice. For any data, ideas, words, diagrams, pictures, or other information from any source, quoted or not, I have cited the sources fully and completely in the text, in endnotes, or in footnotes and bibliographical entries, as required. Furthermore, I certify that the material was prepared by me specifically for this class and has not been submitted, in whole or significant part, to any other class in this university or elsewhere, or used for any purpose other than satisfying the requirements of this class, except that I am allowed to submit this material to a professional publication, peer reviewed journal, or professional conference. In adding my name following the word 'Signature', I intend that this certification will have the same authority and authenticity as a document executed with my hand-written signature."
