Description

 

This course provides a senior-level view of the issues surrounding the adoption and use of information technology in health care. Students gain insight into national initiatives underway to further the development, expansion, and deployment of health care information systems (including clinical applications such as electronic health records, e-prescribing, provider order entry, disease management) and discuss their ramifications at the state and local levels. Issues surrounding the management of health information resources at the institutional level are also explored including topics such as strategic information systems planning; system selection and implementation; IT governance and management; IT budgeting; management’s role in major IT initiatives; assessing and achieving value of health care information systems.

 

Assignment Objectives

 

Upon completion of this assignment, students should be able to:

 

Discuss the factors that are driving the need for increased use of telemedicine in health care.

 

Discuss the current status and use of telemedicine in hospitals, physician practices, and other health care settings.

 

Discuss any major national initiatives underway to further the development, deployment, and expansion of telemedicine in health care and discuss their likely implications for states, regions, and health care organizations.

 

Discuss the major barriers to adoption of telemedicine systems and strategies for overcoming them. 

 

Appreciate the importance of aligning the IT plan with the overall strategic plan of the organization; discuss methods for strategic IT planning.

 

Understand the challenges and limitations of measuring return on investment for health care information systems and telemedicine related initiatives.

 

Evaluate different methods or strategies for assessing value telemedicine information systems.

 

Discuss management-related issues that often arise during the system acquisition and system implementation processes.

Review and Analysis of Literature  

 

You are to write a 7-10 page paper (double spaced) on telemedicine. The paper should describe the nature of the issue and its implications for health care services delivery or health policy. You should include in your paper a discussion of the critical issues surrounding telemedicine and their importance to health care leaders.  In researching your topic you can use articles found in news magazines (such as Healthcare Informatics, Health Data Management), the Internet, and the peer-reviewed journal articles in the library. The majority of the articles cited should come from peer-reviewed publications.

 

Your final paper will be evaluated based upon the following criteria –

 

Ability to synthesize relevant information found in literature and via the Internet

Ability to clearly define issue or topic and scope of paper

Insight into issue or topic

Ability to critically evaluate information reviewed in literature and apply it to issues discussed in paper

Breadth, scope, and relevancy of resources used

Ability to write in clear, concise manner

Overall quality of writing and presentation of report (e.g. well organized, professional in appearance, free of spelling and grammatical errors)
