Assignment 1
Designing a 6 Week Cardiovascular Programme (CV Programme) 15%
Aims of the assignment: Students know the benefits of cardiovascular training. Students can plan CV programme using physiological principles of
Progression and Rest and Recovery. Students can plan CV programme using structure/organization principles of
FITT. Students can explain how they incorporated the organization/structure and
physiological principles in their programme. Students decide what CV activities they want to utilize in their programme Students can plan and control intensity of the sessions in their “6 Week CV
Programme” by taking their HR and setting target HR. Objectives of the assignment: Students state the benefits of cardiovascular training. Students plan their CV programme using physiological principles of
Progression and Rest and Recovery. Students organize the structure of their CV programme using FITT/FIT
principles. Students explain how they incorporated physiological and
structure/organization principles in their programme. Students describe the CV activities they used in their programme. Students use Target HR to set the intensity of their sessions. Instructional Media: Tools and Resources Students will use the BlackBoard technology for submitting their work. The sole resource will be the textbook by Corbin & Welk & Corbin & Welk and
resources posted on Blackboard. The Topic In Assignment 1 you will design a 6 Week Cardiovascular Programme to be
possibly used by yourself. Your programme will be underpinned by physiological
principals of physical training: Progression and Rest and Recovery, and
structure/organization principals of physical training FITT/FIT: Frequency,
Intensity, Time and Type (type here is obvious as it is CV training, hence one “T”
in FITT can be dropped). On top of these two sets of principals you will be
required to set the intensity of your CV training through setting target HR for all
your sessions.
For your “6 Week CV Programme” you will need to choose at least three
different CV activities. The activities you choose must fulfil two conditions: you
must enjoy practicing them and they must be realistic. The weekly frequency of
your training depends on you, however should not be less than 3 times a week
and not more than 6 times a week. Examples of CV activities include: brisk
walking, jogging, running, swimming, rowing, cycling, Nordic walking,
cross country skiing, kayaking, roller blading, treadmill, recumbent bike,
stationary bike, cross trainer. Requirements 1. The front page, before the 1st page of your work will be an Assessment
Rubric. The Assessment Rubric will only be required for the hard copies of
students’ work. Soft copies, submitted online will not have the Assessment
Rubric.
2. The 1st page will be an introduction with the heading “Introduction –
Benefits of Cardiovascular Training” (the entire introduction should not
take more than 1 page) where you will be required to state and explain 4
benefits of the CV training (approximately 16 sentences for the entire
introduction) (textbook p. 121-122)
3. In the 2nd page you will set out your 6 week CV programme in the form of
a horizontally oriented table (template available on the Blackboard).
Over the table there will be heading to the entire page “6 Week CV
Programme”. The template for the programme is available on Blackboard.
You have to use the table template from Blackboard. Content of the table,
typed in the cells should include: the name of the CV activity, how long the
activity lasts, what intensity you plan – target HR (read additional hand-out
“Gym Cardio Intro” available on Blackboard). There may be more activities
in a single session than one. The sample of “6 Week CV Programme” is
available on Blackboard.
4. In the 3rd page explain how you implemented the principles of training:
a) the physiological principles of a) Progression and b) Rest and
Recovery (textbook p. 86 – 87) in your programme. Explain each of
the principles separately, be specific, give examples. (approximately 3
sentences for each principle)
b) FITT principles – Frequency, Intensity, Time and Type. (textbook p
88 – 89, 122 – 124) Explain each of the principles separately, be
specific, give examples of how you used them in your programme.
c) For comprehensive information about both physiological and
structure/organization principles look up in the Textbook Corbin
Chapter 5 pp. 86 – 89, 122 - 124 as well as Handouts and Powerpoints
for Assignment 1. 5. In the 4th page explain how you set the Target HR for your training. (Handout “Target HR can be found on the Blackboard and textbook p. 124 - 128)
6. The 5th page is for the references. Cite the sources of information you
have utilized in your work in accordance with APA rules.
7. In the report you must use your own language.
8. The font used has to be Arial size 12, spaces between lines 1.5. Date Due: WEEK 12 a) Hard copies of written report: As soon as the Lecturer arrives at your class. You can’t hand
in your Assignment 1 in another Section. You will receive zero marks if you hand in your
Assignment 1 in another Section. Hard copy of your Assignment 1 should have the
Assessment Rubric as a cover page. Assessment Rubric should be filled in by typing
names, IDs and sections. b) Soft copies: On SafeAssign on Blackboard before your lesson on a due date. Soft copies
submitted on SafeAssign will not have an Assessment Rubric, instead students will type
their names, ID numbers and sections at the top of the page 1. You can submit your soft
copy days or weeks earlier if desired. You can’t submit your Assignment 1 after the lesson
when the hard copy of your work is due has started. Late Assignments: There is NO late submission of Assignment 1. Assignments received after the deadline will receive 0% marks. The key is to complete your assignments ahead of time in case of technical difficulties.
Technical difficulties are real. They happen. They must be anticipated. They are not an
excuse for a late submission. Assessment Criteria CRITERIA Assessment Rubric for Individual Argument SCORES Introduction Clearly explained 4 benefits of CV training and given 4

principles of Progression and Rest and Recovery have been
implemented in your training. 3.0 Explanation on
structure/organization
principles Clear and specific explanation on how the FITT/FIT principles
