“mini” physical security risk assessment

Let's do some consciousness raising. Let’s take a look at your home and do a “mini” physical security risk assessment. We will do a more detailed one later. (If you are uncomfortable about giving out personal information, you can make up something but be realistic.) Address each of the following elements in a concise manner (at least one or two sentences for each): 1. FACILITY CHARACTERIZATION: Describe your residence and neighborhood. Identify the critical assets in your home. 2. THREAT ANALYSIS: Discuss potential threats (sources of harm, such as car thieves, electrical fires and flooding) and the likelihood of harm. 3. CONSEQUENCE ANALYSIS: Discuss the financial and non-financial impact on your critical assets if there is harm. 4. SYSTEM EFFECTIVENESS ASSESSMENT: Identify the layers of defense you currently have in place. Also, address vulnerabilities (weaknesses) in your home security such as garage doors left open or the lack of smoke alarms. (Warning: Students often confuse threats and vulnerabilities. A threat is an adverse event that has the potential to harm or destroy an asset (Demkin, p.21). Vulnerabilities are physical or operational weaknesses in building facilities (for the purposes of this class) that adversaries could exploit to carry out malevolent acts (Demkin p. 69)) 5. RISK ESTIMATION: Considering the factors in earlier steps, rank the potential threats in terms of risk (you might want to focus on probability and impact). 6. RISK REDUCTION STRATEGIES: If your current layers of defense are inadequate, identify the security countermeasures you need. This home security risk assessment should be at least 100 words. Why 100 words? To ensure that each posting is meaningful, substantial, and reflects deep and thoughtful research and insight. CREATE A NEW THREAD for your posting. Click the Back button and select "Create a Main Topic" off the bottom menu. Give it a descriptive title such as "Wendy's Humble Abode" and address the above requirements in a clear, organized and coherent manner. IN A SECOND POSTING, RESPOND and comment critically on the findings of another student. Did they overlook anything? Did they find out something you did not expect? Provide a detailed explanation for your remarks. Include the name of the student you are responding to. This second posting should be at least 100 words long also. You may provide additional postings beyond the first two (such as responding to a student who commented on your assessment) but please avoid posting "one-liners." MINIMUM NUMBER OF POSTINGS = 2 (again, one should address the assignment and the other a response to another student's posting - again, please indicate his or her name in your posting)
