Option 1: A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings

  1. How is Marquez's story an example of magic realism?
  2. Marquez uses the third person narration, so we do not get much of the old man's perspective. We get the perspectives of the other characters. Why does he do this?
  3. How do the townspeople treat the old man with enormous wings? What does their behavior suggest about them and the community?
  4. Why do the townspeople lose interest in the old man and turn their attention to the spider woman?
  5. Marquez chose the subtitle "A Tale for Children" as a subtitle. Is this ironic?
  6. Is the old man an angel? Will your answer to this question say something about your ideas about spiritual things or theological mystery?
