Background
During the 12th through 14th centuries, many new developments in art, design, and style took place across the globe due to merging technologies and influence of multiple civilizations transported from region to region via trade routes in Europe and Asia, particularly the Silk Road. For example, around 1140 in parts of Europe, a stylistic shift from the Romanesque to the Gothic era ensued. During the Gothic era, the technology developed that enabled builders to create monumental structures designed to awe and inspire visitors and locals alike. Soon, most governments and religious officials who could afford it were commissioning the construction of monumental architecture. In Europe, a resurgence in spatial accuracy and monumentality of art and architecture unseen in Europe since the fall of the Roman Empire occurred.
