Having completed our discussion of Hamlet, let's think about Gertrude.
The closet scene in which Hamlet and his mother exchange words and feelings is really a pivotal moment in the play.
We see Gertrude confronted with her son's anguish over her marriage to Claudius.
Hamlet lashes out at his mother and she responds with "O, speak to me no more./THese words like daggers enter in my ears./No more, sweet Hamlet.../no more." (iii, iv, 94-96).
So what do you make of this woman? Is she simply thoughtless and weak?
Is she misguided and once she "sees the light" does she try to "Â help " her son avenge his father's death? If so, how?
Hamlet is certainly ambivalent about his mother; he is in agony over her obvious sexual activity with Claudius.
Is Hamlet's advice to his mother ignored?

Lastly, how do you feel about Gertrude's drinking from the poisoned cup (Act V)?
