Field Experience Report

Professor Jana Camm Field Experience report Cloncs 2 The best way for someone to determine if they really would like to go into a certain field
is to observe the field. Experience what real life would be like. Being a professional carries many
responsibilities. The competence of most professionals is determined in training by authentic
assessment in real life settings. (pg.13) During this semester I observed three different schools in
the Fort Campbell district. I observed 3 and fourth grade, sixth grade, and high school math.
With a diverse classroom of students who have various levels of knowledge on the subjects being
taught. To meet those requirements the teacher must be able to inspire students and have a lesson
plan that reflects the learning styles of each student. This is also called common core state
standards, which is a set of standards that describe knowledge and skills that students need to be
successful. (pg. 297)
My first observation was in Mr. Linges' classroom at Marshall Elementary. As I walked in
I felt like the kids ran the class, they were all over the place. Ms. Linge used differentiated
instruction. Which is employing a variety of instructional methods and learning activities to
match the different ways that students learn and to accommodate the different levels of learning
that students require. (pg. 356) On the other hand, I had a very positive experience at the same
school but, I was with Mrs. Toole in her third grade class. I observed reading and writing, where
she used social affective strategies. The students were in different work stations for 15 minutes,
interreacting with each other by reading and answering questions as a group. Some would read
with the teacher while others listened to reading as well. Ms. Toole showed me how she deals
with discipline, she has an app on her phone that the parents also can download. It's called dojo,
Mrs. Toole has an emoji for each student. If they are good they get a point, of they are bad she Field Experience report Cloncs 3 can take a point. There's also a blog where she keeps parents informed about what their child is
doing each day. I really liked this strategy, it was interesting to me on how to keep the parents
more involved.
My observation at Mahaffey middle school was my second school I observed at. It was
my first male teacher, which we know there are more female teachers than males in the education
field. Mr. Scott taught social studies, he makes a lesson plan for each day. He has five classes a
day at 45 minutes each class period. One of the classes I observed was first period which the
classroom consisted of 11 Caucasians, 6 African Americans, and 2 Hispanics. Mr. Scott had one
student with an IEP (Individual Education Plan) while I was observing the class. The student and
a teachers aid with him. I liked Mr. Scotts lesson plan he made for each day, he made the same
for each class so that he could stay organized and on track with everyone. I also really enjoyed
how he walked around the whole time and didn’t sit and teach, I feel like it keeps students more
involved on what they are learning. For every class, there was questions on the smart board they
had to come in and start on that first thing. Then, as a whole they all talked about the answers. I
would use this analytic thinking in my classroom to start the class off with a thinking strategy.
My final observation at Fort Campbell high school showed me that I much rather be a pre k – 6
grade teacher. Not only did I felt intimidated in the classroom, but I also noted that the students
were much harder to engage. It was the final week for Mrs. Hales math students, so they were
taking finals and studying for finals. Some students didn’t show any respect for her, students
would talk during the final after she told them to quiet down and would sleep after she told them
everyone should be studying. Perhaps I am not best suited for secondary education, because I
was not very comfortable working with students of that age. However, I acknowledge that as I
continue to grow and mature, adolescents ay become more appealing to me. Field Experience report Cloncs 4 As I walked into each classroom I visualized my own classroom, which gave me this
feeling that teaching is defiantly my calling. I enjoyed my experience at the Fort Campbell
districts. I have learned many different key teaching components throughout my observation.
Whether it be how to run a classroom, or setting up a positive classroom environment. As I have
also learned a lot about myself becoming a teacher, I want to be able to grow with my students
and become a successful teacher. Sometimes when a teacher challenges themselves they learn
things about themselves that they never really knew and I am always up to learning something
new. As a future teacher/ principal, I will take everything I have learned and put towards my
goals and career. Field Experience report Cloncs 5
