EASTS (online)

Task

You will need to design an interface to a system.

You will need to justify every item that you choose to put into this design. The concept it relates to must be clearly identified and explained. You may wish to draw reference from appropriate literature.

Among the many concepts you may consider are:

  • colour and sections
  • layout of the screen
  • “help function” or assistance pages
  • order in which the information is presented
  • use of icons
  • use of input device (eg. keyboard or specific keys)
  • overall layout
  • standards employed

You may wish to refer to Schneidermann’s Eight Golden Rules of Interface Design as a guide. But, you may use some other set of guidelines or standards, if you wish.

All diagrams, screen layouts, etc., should be drawn using the Pencil application and imported into the design document. Design drawings are NOT to be submitted separately.

Assignment Submission
The following conditions must be adhered to for this assignment:

  • This assignment must be completed using the ITC204_Project_Design template that is located in the Interact 2 ITC204 Content Collection;
  • All design drawings must be:
    • Placed in the appropriate location in the Design document,
    • Include an appropriate caption;
  • The document is to be saved in Word format as a single file which includes all design drawings;
  • Assignments are not to be submitted with separate design drawings in separate files using a zip format;
  • All assignments are to be submitted electronically as a single file through EASTS.

Case Scenario & Instructions

A state museum wants to provide information about their collections in a multimedia format within the museum. The museum has two types of collection; the permanent one that is on display at the museum at all times and a temporary collection that is on display for several months only.

The museum curators would like to station information kiosks all over the museum to provide information on individual items on all collections. The provided information must include the name of the item, the history and a description of the item. The information must be provided in text as well as in a multimedia recording.

Visitors must be able to browse through the entire collection using the information kiosk. They should be able to search for a particular item and locate the item within the museum. The information kiosk should be able to direct the visitor from the current location to the location of the required item on display.

The information kiosks must also provide information about the locations of facilities and services within the museum such as the toilets, parking, food stores and museum shops. The information kiosks must be able to show on a map the current location and the shortest route to the required service.

You have been commissioned to design the information kiosk for the museum. The museum curators want to provide their visitors with the ability to browse the collections, locate the collections, and locate the facilities and services within the museum. Information on the individual items of the collections should also be provided.

The information kiosks should be usable by all types of visitors, from the young students to the older visitors. Some of the visitors may have limited understanding of English; therefore the provided instructions and information should be easy to understand.

Your design focus is on providing the application screen design and layout function for the information kiosk. You do not have to worry about the database and network facilities of the kiosks.

You may make any other assumptions not stated here but you must state them in your Key Assumptions in your Project Brief. You will need to provide drawings of the interface design for your chosen system. Drawings must clearly show all components of your design and each component must be clearly labeled. Do not use any existing Museum name, trademarks or pictures.

The following is out of scope for this project:

  • Electrical and technical specifications of the kiosk;

Rationale

This assignment covers the following objectives for this subject:

  • be able to list and explain the importance of the principles of design in relation to the design of an interface;
  • be able to evaluate an interface to determine its effective usability and identify enhancements for improvement;
  • be able to design a user interface to meet a given set of requirements;
  • be able to design a set of appropriate usability tests for a given interface;
  • be able to interpret and evaluate usability testing results to plan interface improvements.

  • The use of colour in different frames and sections must be identified;
  • All help and user assistance functions must be identified;
  • The use of icons;
  • User task navigation.
  •
  • You will need to provide full details for each section including wireframes, screen shots or any other details required so that the reader can clearly understand the design. Each component must be labelled and there should be a brief discussion of the justification for use. This must be referenced to the literature. >
  • Design Justification
  • < You will need to discuss how your design meets your user requirements and objectives. This can be done as a list, a table or even a requirements matrix. I’d suggest a table in the document as it’s much cleaner and easier to control. You should also reference your design back to the principles of design and support that with references.>
