The general manager of a large metropolitan post office has decided to place two service personnel in the lobby to answer typical holiday season mailing questions from its customers. Last year, this information booth was tested, and the response was most favorable. The manager predicted that during the peak part of the day, customers would arrive at the desk at an average rate of 27 per hour. Last year, the time required to answer questions and make mailing suggestions averaged 4 minutes. The coefficients of variation of the inter-arrival times and the service times are both equal to 1.
If two clerks are placed in the lobby during peak hours each day, the manager would like to know the following:
a. If peak hours last 4 hours, what percentage of that time on average, will each server spend helping the customer?
b. On average, how long will customers have to wait to be served?
c. How many servers should be used to ensure that the waiting time averages less than 4 minutes?
d. will the arrival pattern change as more servers are added?
