OUTFILE syntax command

As with each unit in the course, create a new subdirectory inside your psy7615 directory named Unit2 (You will likely have much less trouble if you leave spaces out of directory names.) Open a new Syntax Editor window in IBM SPSS. If you need additional help, see the Unit 2 Assignment Help in the Resources.

  1. Create syntax that reads the data file unit1_data_nonames.dat from last week, and assigns variable names. Use the Text Import Wizard to create the syntax using the file with variable names, unit1_data_names.dat.
  2. Create a SAVE OUTFILE syntax command in the same syntax file used above, just below the other syntax, which saves the data file under the name unit2_data.sav.
  3. Save the syntax file containing both commands from the Syntax Editor window under the nameunit2_syntax.sps.
  4. Run the syntax in the Syntax Editor window causing IBM SPSS to read the data file (the version with no names), and save it under the name unit2_data.sav.
  5. Attach the following files to your assignment and upload them:
    • unit2_data.sav
    • unit2_syntax.sps
