Even though in most professions, according to LaLa, Jewang, van Dortmont, & van Geest (2017), individual communication skills are a must, I believe that group communication is easier. They wrote that whether it be a doctor, engineer, or pharmacist, communication skills are best learned through practice The more contact you have with individuals, the better your become at speaking (sect. 5, par 1). Example: a patient coming to pick up a prescription for the first time need to be taught administration techniques and side effects to look for. For this reason, the pharmacist must have one-on-one conversation. Â
Group communication, according to Baack (2012 sect. 9.1), consist of two or more people interacting with a common goal. He distinguished a group from a team. In speaking to a group, the speaker must follow some of the same tactics as when speaking to individuals.  Therefore, group communication should be similar to individual communication. Tactics such as eye contact and body language need to be utilized. With group conversation, I believe, that even though you must have eye contact, you do not have to be in such close contact.  Â
In order to effectively communicate in groups, formal or informal, you must be seeking a common goal. With the formal group, according to Baack, you must follow chain of command. Informal groups are developed for friendship or socialization.  Even though with any group, you must be aware of your eye contact, body language, and voice control, I find it better to talk to a large group rather than a small round table group.  In a large group setting, I usually just grab hold to the microphone or podium and look around at no one in particular.Â
One of the unique challenges that I recognize in groups is the hard of hearing. Even young children have difficulty with this.  Children with hearing loss, according to Lucker and Malloy (2014), are usually taught one-on-one. These children have to be taught how to deal with group communication (p. 23).  If not taught early, the children grow up and avoid group communication all together (p. 24).
In order to speak to groups, Zielinski (2015) wrote that you must have a degree of self-awareness. You must be able to identify your own strengths and weaknesses. Your audience can tell when you are authentic and when you are bluffing (para 8). You must be true to yourself.Â

Hey Johnnie,
I enjoyed reading your post and you explained how the communication in groups is different from the individual communication. I also feel that I would rather work in a group than working alone because I feel that I also learn more not only what we are working on together, but I learn from the others in the group such as how they do things and a person can get many ideas about their job from each other. I agree that the more you have contact with people you become at speaking and also learning to work well with others. I have worked in many places where there was always a communication gap and it mostly was due to the different age groups. At one place I worked we had a staff of 10 and a young new employee became good at her job and the next thing we knew the supervisor was getting her to do her job and this caused a lot conflict between the employees. But when the new girl started acting like a boss, then it became so bad at work that they transferred her out of that department.

Individual communication is when one person listens to and/or speaks to another person (Baack, 2012). A person without effective communication skills sometimes falls short in proving their worth and will simply go unnoticed and they would rather talk to few people rather than a crowd (Group vs. Individual Communication. (n.d.). The Individual members that are part of a group sometimes will adopt a style of behavior which is conflict, conformity or consensus (Phipps, 2007; Tubbs, 1995). You might have a conflict between each other when there is a problem with the social interaction between the members. To avoid having a conflict with each other, the members must always have an open communication with each other and a goal that everyone can agree on.Â
A group consists of two or more people that work and interacts with each other to accomplish their goal and job tasks. (Schein, 1980). These groups are mostly a small group that works solely together to acheive that goal, but many times differences do play a part of when one wants to take more of the recognition for a task or job that is completed. You could have one member that does not want to contribute anything, but a good leader will find a way to persuade the employee to at least get involved and show an effort (Baack, 2012). A good leader will also encourage everyone that is part of the group to offer opinions and to be involved with the group (Baack, 2012).
I have worked in companies where I have worked in a group, and the each one of us had a task to do, but we worked as a team and not separately. There would be times to where that one certain person did not agree on something or wanted to be the boss and this would cause our meeting to last longer or our project to be delayed. If things like this continue, this is when individuals would rather work alone than in a group. The only conflict that I have observed, was when everyone tries to be the boss or one employee is always working more and harder than the other one. This is the reason there are so many people now working at home to avoid the conflicts and the behaviors that they have experienced at work.

The difference between group communication and individual communication is that group communication is often distinguished by one unified voice within the group. In other words, group communications is a union between two or more members that facilitates one group's mentality, one group thought and one voice. Individual communications is the act of communicating an idea or concept without the accompaniment of other team members to collaborate with. Each thought process generated is solely that of the individual in which case it is up to the individual to implement a strategy to accomplish his/her goal or main objective.
The unique challenges to communicating with groups are the need to distinguish everyone roles in the group dynamic. Four types of group members makeup formal and informal groups: the leader, opinion leaders, members in good standing, and the gatekeeper. The leader directs group activities. (Baack, 2012) The roles in these groups are important to avoid conflict. When communicating in a group, you have to be aware of the group dynamic. In group settings, it is important to decide the best method of communicating using technology, should social media be used. A lot of individuals are not that secure with using social media outlets like twitter, facebook or instagram.Â
On my current job, I occasionally would have to work in formal group settings. The first thing that was established was deciding on the group leader and what method we were going to use to communicate, either email or texting. Also, another important decision was it had to be decided if the group was going to be run like a democracy or autocracy. This was important because it had to be decided once the leader made a decision then it wouldn't be voted on.
