Project 1, Defining Family: Comparison Paper on Historical, Current, and Fictional Definitions and/or Representations of Family (20% of course grade)
There is significant variation in family life from one society to another, and across time and cultures. Differences may exist in family relationships, forms of marriage, expectations about family roles, responsibilities and duties, and how “family” is defined (culturally, legally, politically). Your task in this essay will be to compare the definition of family and the family relationships in your own society with that of another society (or another culture or another time). In your three-page essay, please specifically identify the two societies/cultures/times that you will be comparing in your essay, and address the following questions in your essay:
How is a “typical” family defined in each of the two societies/cultures/times?
How do parent-child relations compare between the two societies/cultures/times?
How do husband-wife relations compare between the two societies/cultures/times?
What are the challenges and changes (economic, social, political) that families face in each of the two societies/cultures/times?
What are the functions or roles of the family in each of the two societies/cultures/times?
Make sure that you construct and present your essay clearly. Please make sure that your essay contains the following components:
(a) Introduction
(b) Claims
(c) Evidence
(d) Analysis/Conclusions
