In addition to being used with computers and consumer products, there are also processors and other components designed to be implanted inside the human body, such as the VeriChip (discussed in Project 4), implantable wafers containing medication and a processor that delivers the medication at the appropriate time and dosage, camera pills that are swallowed to transmit images of an individual’s digestive system to a receiving unit, and pacemakers designed to regulate an individual’s heart rate. One step further is brain-to-computer interfacing (BCI), which involves implanting electrodes directly into the human brain to restore lost functionality or to facilitate the communication ability of severely disabled individuals, such as by enabling them to control a mouse using only their thoughts.
