According to social control theory, delinquent acts ensue when an individual's bond to society is weakened or broken.(Winfree, Abadinsky, 2017). Strong social bonds-attachment to others, commitment to conventional goals, involvement in conventional activities restrict acting in self interest.(Winfree, Abadinsky, 2017). When a child frequently decides to skip school to steal a bicycle or throw several paper towels on the neighbors yawn, if caught the child is sent to juvenile facilities where he or she is labeled as a delinquent. After a while, this child begins to believe that he or she is a delinquent and eventually lives up to the new found title of criminal. Take a look at Ted Bundy who did not get a long with his peers and stole things he wanted in his youth. The importance of the school atmosphere and the student-school bond is grounded in sociological, school psychology, and education literature.(http://web.b.ebscohost.com.portal.lib.fit.edu). Children spend twelve plus years learning about the world they live in, themselves, and how to fit into the world they live in. When they lose touch with the world they live in, then it becomes all about themselves and this is where laws can be seen being broken as they have not respect for authority or laws of the land. Social control theory, as defined by Travis Hirschi, suggests that conforming behavior is a result of strong pro-social bonds with society and when a student has an attachment to the school, is committed to school and academic success, is involved in school related activities, and believes that the rules and policies of the school are fair, he or she is less likely to engage in delinquent activities.(http://web.b.ebscohost.com.portal.lib.fit.edu).Â

To resolve this problem, police and school districts must work together to ensure that all students show up and remain in schools where they should be. It should then be a requirement for all students to participate in a sport or two. More funding for programs such as boys and girls club should be authorized and other programs like it should be created to ensure that the kids never have idol hands.Â
