Refer to Exercise 7.34. Suppose that an American woman is randomly selected. Are her age and her fertility status independent? Explain.
Exercise 7.34
According to Krantz (1992, p. 102), “[In America] women between the ages of 20 and 24 have a 90 percent chance of being fertile while women between 40 and 44 have only a 37 percent chance of bearing children [i.e., being fertile].” Define appropriate events, and write these statements as conditional probabilities, using appropriate notation.
