We discussed how “Ellis Island Whites” eventually became part of the American character. Compare the Ellis Island immigrant story with that told by Mark Wild in Street Meeting. What similarities and differences can you find between the nineteenth-century immigrants in New York and their non-white ethnic counterparts in Los Angeles prior to the Second World War? Based on your analysis, is there credence to the prevailing immigrant story of “struggle” and overcoming obstacles to earn a place in the American character? Use specific evidence from lecture and the text (and the Ellis Island documentary, if you like). (500 words)
