Writing a successful proposal requires planning.

Proposal Worksheet

Writing a successful proposal requires planning. This worksheet calls for you to plan seven important aspects of your proposal. Please respond by saving this file on your hard drive and entering the requested information after each prompt. You can delete my explanations of each prompt.

Audience. For your assignment, you will be creating a realistic organizational scenario. For instance, you might work for a real-estate company that is considering purchasing company cars for use by its agents. In a paragraph, describe the organizational scenario, focusing on the principal reader. Who is he or she? What attitudes or expectations might this person have in reading and responding to your proposal? For more information on audience, see Chapter 5 of your textbook.

Subject. What is the subject of your proposal? For instance, for the proposal about purchasing automobiles for use by your company's real-estate agents, how should you limit your scope? You wouldn't be able to consider all automobiles—what criteria would you consider appropriate in evaluating automobiles?

Problem or opportunity. What is the problem or opportunity that you will address in your proposal? How can you express the magnitude or importance of the problem or opportunity?

Purpose. State the purpose of the proposal clearly in one or two sentences.

Research. Describe in a few paragraphs or lists the major kinds of primary and secondary research that you will need to do in carrying out your research. State the research questions you need to answer, as well as the technique you intend to use to answer each one. See Chapter 7 for information on research techniques.

Budget. Indicate what financial resources (including employee time) you will need to complete the project described in the proposal.

Other appendices. In addition to a budget, task schedule, and list of works cited, what other appendices do you think your proposal might include?
