Comparative Literary Analysis Paper
Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is two-fold: 1) to show how you can make specific, interesting, thoughtful connections (i.e. think critically/analyze) between a poem and a short story and 2) to show me how you can carefully identify and then explicate/analyze the tools used (by the poet/author) in order to make their work effective. Finally, a significant purpose of the assignment is to show that you can offer an ORIGINAL ANALYSIS—that is, you will show that you do not need to consult the Internet when trying to understand, extract meaning, and comparatively analyze two pieces of literature (any evidence that you have Googled ideas will result in a ZERO for the assignment).
Specifics: 4-5 double-spaced pages (around 1200-1700 words, not including your Works Cited, double spaced)
Prompt: Explain how one poem and one short story are connected thematically; explain how the poet/author may offer something different/additional concerning that theme. Explore the different ways in which the poet and author try to effectively convey that theme (i.e. analyze the effective literary devices used).
First, you need to think about CONNECTIONS in THEME that you have seen/noticed between one of the poems and one of the short stories. (Remember, the “subject matter” here is “WAR,” but there are many different themes/messages that each poet and author want to get across to the reader; you are looking for a connection/a similarity in message between one poem and one short story).
THEN, I’d like you to offer an ANALYSIS for HOW the authors APPROACH this theme (perhaps they offer both similar and different insights?) and how they CHOOSE to develop/reveal that theme throughout the texts. This is when the analysis of the TOOLS/literary devices is needed (alliteration, rhythm, enjambment, symbolism, tone, diction, imagery, narration choices, etc.). Ultimately, you should keep these three “big” questions in mind as you plan, write, and revise:
WHAT? (is the message(s) the author wants the reader to consider while/when finished reading?)
HOW? (is the author revealing this? What literary devices are used to convey his/her message/to make it effective?)
WHY? (is this topic/subject matter important?)
As you continue to read, analyze, and review these texts, you should start thinking about your THESISwhat are you CLAIMING about these works? What are you saying they DO, or what message do they convey? Moreover, why is that message IMPORTANT?

“The Hurt Locker” by Brian Turner
Nothing but the hurt left here.
Nothing but bullets and pain
and the bled out slumping
and all the fucks and goddamns
and Jesus Christs of the wounded.
Nothing left here but the hurt.
Believe it when you see it.
Believe it when a 12-year-old
rolls a grenade into the room.
Or when a sniper punches a hole
deep into someone’s skull.
Believe it when four men
step from a taxicab in Mosul
to shower the street in brass
and fire. Open the hurt locker
and see what there is of knives
and teeth. Open the hurt locker and learn
how rough men come hunting for souls.
