This assignment should be approximately one page in length.

This assignment should be approximately one page in length. Research is required. See below for details.

One of the topics addressed in the required reading assignment for next week is the "Myths of Childhood." Before you read that section, take a look at your life and the many superstitions you have heard (and perhaps practiced) throughout your life. Although you may recognize them as superstitions now, you may not realize they were previously considered important to the people who practiced them. For this writing assignment, please choose a superstition you remember from childhood. (Be sure not to confuse a superstition with an urban legend. A superstition is a belief or practice resulting from supernatural causality.)

Here are some good examples of common superstitions:

  • Walking Under a Ladder
  • Friday the Thirteenth
  • Saying "God Bless You" after a sneeze
  • Spilling Salt
  • Fingers Crossed
  • Knock on Wood
  • Carrying a Rabbit's Foot
  • Finding a four-leaf Clover
  • Break a Mirror
  • Open Umbrella Indoors
  • Hanging a horseshoe
  • Stepping Over a Broom
  • Stepping on a Crack
  • Find a Penny
  • Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue

Use the Internet to research information about the superstition you have chosen. You must include at least one resource for your chosen superstition.

In your writing assignment, please respond to the following questions:

  • What is the superstition you have chosen?
  • When did you hear about it?
  • Where (or from whom) did you hear it or learn of it?
  • What does the superstition mean? Are there consequences? If so, what are they? (For example, if your superstition is to avoid walking under a ladder, what do you think will happen if this is done?)
  • When you researched the superstition, what did you learn about it? Where did it come from? Does it exist, in some form, in other cultures? If so, explain.
  • Do you still find yourself thinking of this superstition? Does it change your behavior?
