Scholars have traditionally seen the Enlightenment & the subsequent political revolutions

Scholars have traditionally seen the Enlightenment & the subsequent political revolutions (English, American, French, etc.) that followed as the 'cradle' modern democracy & human rights.' Briefly outline both the key causes and major intellectual threads associated with the enlightenment. In addition, how can we account for the 'radical phase' of the french revolution in this narrative? For example, why & how did the Jacobin blend seemingly contradictory language of 'republican virtues' (Liberty, fraternity, & equality) with a call for mass political violence? Please only use ideas from our lectures and readings. (Two Treatise Government, John Locke and  Justification of the use of Terror, Maximilien Robespierre)
