Hospitality Supervision and Entrepreneurship – Chef Karabats

Case Study #11

LCBC215 – Hospitality Supervision and Entrepreneurship – Chef Karabats

Assignment:

Melanie has just been hired as the dining room manager at a local restaurant. She has noticed that her employees seem to be uninspired. In watching her employees, she discovers that they are just not motivated, and this is leading to poor job performance. She has been doing a great deal of reading on the subject, but she is unsure of exactly how to motivate her staff. She finally decides that the best thing to do is to provide incentives for working harder. If employees do their work properly, then they will receive a reward. If they work poorly, they will be punished accordingly.

  • From your book: What theory of motivation is she following?
  • What are the potential problems that she faces as she tries to utilize this theory of motivation? What other factors for nonperformance is she failing to consider? Be specific to this scenario.
  • What is the best way for her to find out what motivates her employees? Why?
  • If you were Melanie, what would you do to try and motivate your employees? Why?
