Does the the phrase "First National Bank of Walmart" strike a positive or negative chord? Walmart isn't a bank, but it does provide some financial services: it offers a no-fee Walmart Discover card with a cash-back feature, cashes checks and sells money orders through an alliance with Moneygram International, and houses bank branches in more than a million of its stores. Through a partnering agreement with SunTrust Banks, the retailer has also set up in-store bank operations branded, "Walmart Money Center by SunTrust." A few years ago, Walmart made a bold attempt to buy several banks but dropped the idea when it encountered stiff opposition. Even so, experts say it's not a matter of whether Walmart will become a bank, but when. What is your opinion? Should Walmart be allowed to enter the financial services industry and offer checking and savings accounts, mortgages and business loans? Who would benefit if Walmart become a key player in the financial services industry? Who would be harmed? Comment on at least one other student's post.
