Description

For this assignment, we ask that you read through the (imaginary) Aetna contract with Orlberg Memorial Hospital (again, imaginary) and look for the “flip side” of issues you saw in the Costco Aetna health plan. Although this assignment will require you to make comparisons to the Costco Aetna plan that you are examining with your Costco Group, this is an entirely individual assignment that should be completed independently of this module’s group discussion and the Analyzing Medicare group assignment in Module Four.

Before beginning the Orlberg assignment, please review the introductory podcast. (attached below)

The Situation

Orlberg Memorial Hospital is a 200-bed, not very profitable local hospital serving a small Oregon town and its rural surroundings. There is a Costco in a nearby big-city suburb, many of whose employees live in this town and use Orlberg Memorial Hospital. Orlberg is negotiating its first managed care contract with Aetna in this not-heavily-capitated area. The board of directors needs to be informed about the pros and cons of entering into such an agreement. Since you work at Orlberg and the CEO knows your son is considering a job at Costco, the Orlberg CEO has asked you to examine both the Costco Aetna health plan and the proposed Orlberg Aetna provider agreement to see what crossover issues there may be.

Begin by reviewing the contract between Orlberg Memorial Hospital and Aetna.

Based on a fairly quick reading of the Orlberg contract (not in-depth study), use the attached template to explain the implications of each of the following provisions for Orlberg and for Costco employees:

•    Impact of Orlberg signing a provider agreement with Aetna
•    Impact of any fee schedule negotiated with Orlberg

You may wish to consult other sources beyond those provided in the course. All sources, including course materials, must be cited in text in APA style.
