Hello Everyone,

The business environment that I have chosen for this forum is Technological. This is just due to pure curiosity, rather than a passion for the business environment. I think that throughout the years, technology has advanced in great strides. As technology advances, businesses have had to change their operating strategies.

According to the article Technological Environment, the term technological environment defines “the field of technology which affects business by new inventions of productions and other improvements in techniques to perform the business work” (Kumar 2009). In the past, the technological business environment looked a lot different than it does now. According to the Daniel Burrus, businesses did not have access to the technology that dominates businesses in the present as “only a very minimal number of people used e-mail and pagers, and even fewer used the very expensive and bulky cell phone” (20 Years, 2).

The technological business environment of the past was not as developed nor productive as it is now. The technological advancements of the 21st century has made it easier for businesses to function and produce positive results. As for the future of the technological business environment, I see it as ever-changing. Technology is going to continue to advance, which is going to make the business environment advance. Unless the business environment becomes too reliant on technology.

In today’s business world, the advancements and involvement of technology in the business environment can be both a good and a bad thing. According to the business theorist Clayton M. Christensen, companies can be successful when they “embrace innovations that are what he callssustaining technologies, which are often responsible for performance breakthroughs” (Fisher 6). This can boost business for the company. However, Christensen explains that “a disruptive technology, on the other hand, is a product or service that your best customers can’t use and that has substantially lower profit margins than your business can support” (Fisher 6). When companies implant a technology that is frustrating or confusing to customers, it becomes a detriment to the company.

The advancement of technology can be good for the business environment, as it has been for the past 20+ years. However, there is a fine line with technology. Technology can begin to hurt the business environment if it is relied on to heavily, or if it becomes too hard for customers to utilize and understand. For example, I know personally, I have watched my grandparents struggle with a software for taxes.

Adolph Wagner hypothesized that level of state activity (and involvement) was linked to economic growth. (Kuckuck, 2014). This basis for stages of economic development is slightly different than that of Walt Rostow, who suggested countries passed through stages of development based on trade and income. (Ford, 2004). While an abundance of income and trade goods is a great general basis for economic growth and wellbeing, the way the money is used is more important. For example, an economy would not thrive if most of its money were put towards the salary of its employees given that this would mean little money to fund benefit and education programs.

Twenty years ago, the United States would have been at a point where technological innovation provided a range of investment opportunities, as Rostow suggested. (Ford, 2004). These technological advances and investment opportunities would have generated more income potential, allowing for the funding of important public services. Based on prior knowledge, the 1990’s were a period of welfare reform. This reform would not have been possible without adequate funding; as such we would not have the same SNAP (supplemental nutrition assistance program) or TANF (temporary assistance to needy families) programs in effect today.

Today, the United States is at Stage 5, which Rostow called “High Mass Consumption”. Evidence of economy geared towards consumption and service dominance lies in the abundance of businesses available in most urban and suburban cities. We value our time, money, and personal possessions over quality of life in some ways. There are large groups of people that go out and buy a new iPhone or Galaxy Note every year simply because a new one has been released—this screams of mass consumption for no logical reason! We are at a point that is quite intimidating and frightful.

The future for the United States is a giant question mark. I feel that we have progressed exponentially compared to our growth rate one hundred or two hundred years ago. Dystopian novels, movies, and video games are entirely possible at the rate we are going. Hopefully none of those things happen in the next 20 years, but I definitely believe that technology will find a way to take over in one or more aspects of the economy. Cars are being manufactured that can self-drive and self-park, and virtual reality is making leaps and bounds. There is no telling how advanced or stunted our economy will be in 20 to 30 years. I can say that we seem to be headed in a positive direction as far as education funding is going. From what I’ve seen on Facebook about new federal aid options and affordable education, there may not be as much of a struggle for our youth! A well-educated population means a well-oiled future economy.

Wal-Mart is one of the best companies in today’s society. They are literally everywhere you go! The Wal-Mart company falls within the Retail Industry and is essentially leading the pack. With competition such as Costco, Amazon and Home Depot, to be at the top of the industry is not an easy accomplishment. Definitely shows the well structured business of the Wal-Mart Company! The domestic environment of the Wal-Mart company is the United States. Wal-Mart is actually based from Bentonville, Arkansas. The business theorist that I would like to include in this discussion is David Aaker, he is a specialist in marketing and brand strategy.

There are many government regulations utilized to control the retail industry including the Wal-Mart company. One of the main regulations for the retail industry is making false or deceptive claims with advertisements regarding the company’s products and/or services, this is against federal and state law. There are also consumer protection laws, used to prevent businesses from using misleading marketing campaigns as a way to increase the organizations’ sales numbers. In the Retail industry, business’ must also honor advertised pricing discounts. It is completely illegal for a company to trick customers into thinking a discount exists when it actually does not. In the same sense, the regular price of merchandise being sold by the company cannot be advertised as a sale price.

These regulations are just a few of the many controlling factors that are against the Wal-Mart company. The Wal-Mart must be constantly assured that their advertisements and other marketing options are up to date and accurate with promotional sales and discounts. Any flaw in the marketing portion of the Wal-Mart Corporation would cause for a loss in profit or even a law suit. Also, in the actual establishments Wal-Mart managers must assure employees update sales and discount signs once they are expired so that they stay within the regulation or must accept the sale or discount shown causing for a loss in profit.

The business theorist that I believe would be a great asset to help this company in the retail business environment would have to be David Aaker. David Aaker specializes in marketing and brand strategy. He would be phenomenal at composing ways to combat and prevent misleading marketing campaigns and is able to create marketing options that would only look to improve the success of the Wal-Mart company. Also, Wal-Mart is a global company that is established in multiple different countries. David Aaker would look to increase and expand the Wal-Mart company to branch out even more, creating more exposure and capability to increase profitability even more than the company brings in now.

I have chosen Cisco Systems, Inc. for my best company. The main reason I chose this company is because it is almost in the family. I say almost because my son is engaged to the daughter of the CEO, Chuck Robbins. So, naturally I had to pick it and the fact that it is a great company. Cisco Systems, Inc. is a top designer, manufacturer and seller for networking products, communications, and Information Technology. Some of the company’s products include Telephones, wireless routers, and products for transporting data, voice and video. The domestic environment for Cisco Systems, Inc. is the USA. They are located in San Jose California. I believe that Jan Dietz is the best theorist to use for any Technology company.

There are Import and Export Regulations for Cisco products to be distributed globally. These products are controlled under the U.S.Export Administration Regulations and Wassenaar Arrangement as telecommunications/networking equipment within the following classifications: 5A991, 5D991, 5E991 5A992, 5D992, 5E992, 5A002, 5D002, and 5E002. The Wassenaar Arrangement is set to be sure that all products are distributed internationally secure and stabile. And that all conventional arms, goods and Technology does not end up in the hands of terrorists. Through these national polices it is ensured that all transfers do not enhance military capabilities which undermine these goals.

Traditional costs associated with taxes on imports have been far surpassed by those resulting from non-tariff barriers (NTBs). NTBs often take the form of burdensome technical standards and regulations that must be met before a product makes it to the marketplace. Requirements such as unnecessary testing and certification can drive up costs for companies and consumers alike, and often prevent the latest innovations from reaching those markets. Big Corporate companies are developing certain test that are making distribution of products safe and faster. Cisco has developed a software called Auto Test that can detect any issues with a product, if a customer’s inventory is low on the certain product and it ensures that all regulations are enforced.

Jan Dietz would be a great asset to Cisco Systems. He is a Dutch Information systems researcher. He has been the Dutch national representative in Information Systems for many years and is member of Design and Evaluation of Information Systems. He is also the founder of DEMO (Design & Engineering Methodology for Organizations). This is the basic transactions that can be composed to accounts for complex transactions. Jan Dietz is also co-founder and chairman of the DEMO Knowledge Center and he has participated in numerous practical DEMO is projects regarding the redesign and reengineering of organizations. The DEMO methodology gives the analyst an understanding of the business processes of the organization.
