Purpose and GoalsPlan of Action

• What milestone or milestones will you be working on this quarter?
• What do you hope to accomplish this quarter?

Submit a plan of action within the first two weeks of the start of the quarter. This plan should be specific, measurable, and attainable. The activity serves two purposes:

1. You confirm to your mentor which milestones you are currently working to complete.
2. Your mentor will use the information in the activity to help evaluate your progress at the end of the quarter. If your plan needs to be revised during the quarter, the newest version will be used to evaluate your progress at the end of the quarter.

Instructions

1. Identify the milestone you most recently completed, and identify the milestone you are currently working on.
2. Describe your plan of action for the next ten weeks. What do you plan to accomplish? Are there any obstacles that could hinder your plans? How will you accomplish your goals during this quarter? Your plan must include goals that are specific, measurable, and realistic.
3. Your mentor will review your plan and either accept it, or send it back with suggestions for revision. Revise and resubmit until your mentor accepts your plan.

Example of a good plan:

• Currently I am in Milestone 3 and working on sections 1 and 2 of my Research Plan.
• I will submit a draft of the Topic Approval section of the Research Plan to my mentor by (date).
• While my mentor reviews my work, I will continue to research journal articles for the Literature Review portion of my dissertation.
• After my mentor has reviewed my draft, we will arrange a phone conference to discuss any revisions.
• I do not know of any obstacles that will get in my way.
• If I am unable to fulfill any part of this plan by the deadlines I have established, I will contact both my mentor and my advisor to discuss the situation and develop a new plan for the quarter.

Example of what you should not submit:

• I plan to work on my Research Plan this quarter.

Your plan should always keep you moving forward and take into consideration any prior feedback from your mentor and the demands and responsibilities of your life. If you have any questions about developing your quarterly plan, please do not hesitate to contact your mentor and dissertation advisor for suggestions and guidance on creating a plan that is attainable and meaningful.

At the end of the quarter, your mentor will revisit the plan you submit and compare it to your accomplishments during the quarter.
