Seek out a conversation with a friend, relative, classmate, co-worker, or instructor. Attempt to engage them in a conversation about politics, religion, or corporate ethics. Play the role of an active listener. Ask open-ended questions, seek to understand the speaker by obtaining feedback, and gain their trust and willingness to speak. Write an analysis of this encounter. How well were you able to engage the other party? How strong were your listening skills? Was it difficult to receive feedback? Why or why not? How effective was nonverbal communication? Would the encounter have been better with more effective communication skills? Were you comfortable in the role of a listener? How can you improve your listening skills? Perform a search in the Business Week archives. Find an article on intercultural or international issues in managerial or corporate communication. Write a synopsis and discuss with other students. Your synopsis should be at least 500 words long.
