Occupational Health and Safety

Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Portfolio (30%)

Group Research Project- four people to a group

Duein Session 10

Health and safety in the workplace remains a significant widespread problem costing workers, the community and the economy alike. Although in the past, OH&S has emphasised preventing deaths, injury and disease, organisations and safety managers need to focus on the promotion of health and safety to fulfil the basic needs of employees, while at the same time improving business performance. As new threats to our health and safety emerge and others are removed, an active commitment to creating effective health and safety management systems, genuine consultation among employees, their representatives, managers and supervisors is needed in order to build a culture that promotes a healthy organisation.

The aim of this assignment is to identify how organisational practices can foster a climate of organisational health by understanding:

1. the laws and institutional frameworks of OHS,

2. how to identify hazards and manage risks,

3. how to manage new forms of hazards, and

4. how to notify, report and manage incidents.

Please complete all four tasks for this assignment by following the instructions carefully.Assignments should present academic content, which does not compromise creativity.

Task 1: OHS Laws and Institutional Frameworks (approx 700 words)

Read the following scenario:

The ‘Body Beautiful’ corporation (a gym) has just employed five new young personal trainers and knowledge of OHS issues was part of the job criteria. As a floor supervisor, you are responsible for safety issues and you need to make sure all workers are aware of the hazards involved in the daily running of the business. You have decided to hold a meeting to discuss worker safety and issue all workers with a simple fact sheet on OHS.

Your task is to produce an OHS fact sheet for the ‘Body Beautiful’ corporation. Your fact sheet should contain but is not limited to the following information:

· The purpose of the OHS Act

· The main OHS responsibilities for

a. employers

b. workers

c. everyone in the workplace.

· Example of potential hazard(s) in the workplace.

Be sure to make the content specific to the workplace/industry.
