Reading chapter twelve of WOTE I got the clear sense of what the chapter was about, which was the growth of food supply. Also how it has consistently shifted from being stable to being unstable since 1950, when it was at its most stable state. There have been some countries that have overcome these situations of shortage of crops or grain from the farmlands. Countries like India have come up with a new method by improving their farm-output. The new strategy included “replacing grain ceilings prices that catered to urban consumers with grain support prices to encourage farmers to invest in raising land productivity”. Even with this information and improvement to India and the other countries like Malawi and Ethiopia, I am still not persuaded on this chapter that Brown has explained to us. The reason I am not persuaded is because unlike his more recent chapters, he doesn’t give sense of urgency. This chapter reminds me of the previous chapters of WOTE, where all Brown did was talk about facts and numbers. Another relevant reason to why I was not persuaded on this chapter is because he gives examples of the problems being fixed or how some other countries are dealing with the situation of shortage. I feel like if this is the case then it doesn’t mean anything to us besides informing us the problems are being solved. We need to know about the problems that are going on, the most urgent, and the way to fix these problems as a society.
