FIRST: Read the article “I Never Owned Any Music To Begin With”, the “Response to…” article, and the “My Song Got Played On Pandora 1 Million Times…” article in the Topics in Music Today Instructional Materials.
As our society moves more and more into an all digital media age, the difficulties concerning the security of those resources become greater and greater. This has a major impact on many areas of entertainment including movies, video games, and music.
Music has been one of the most visible areas where piracy has occurred. As Napster took prominence in the late 90’s (and the impending law suits from Metallica), file sharing and illegally downloading music became the norm for many of our cultures youth (myself included).
Many people say that they download music illegally because it’s more convenient than actually purchasing it.While this MAY have been the case 10 years ago (still not making it right), today downloading music directly to your phone or iPod is as simple as hitting the “Purchase” button and typing in your password. When I have pointed this out to students in classes, their response is usually a silent shrug.
Then there is the issue of streaming music. As you can see by the “My Song Got Played On Pandora 1 Million Times…” article, artists are compensated VERY little for their wares on services like Pandora or Spotify.
What are your thoughts on the state of digital downloads and streaming?Do you think that the price of music is still too much? What are your feelings on the points brought up by David Lowery in his response to Emily White? What about to Emily White’s initial post on the NPR blog?Do you feel that artists should be more compensated for their work, or do you think they get enough compensation already?
