With advances in audio technology, talent has almost been taken out of the equation in terms of being able to produce a quality-sounding recording (both in terms of production quality and performance quality). Throw the accessibility of the internet into the mix and now it is easy to distribute your product to the entire world for very little cost.

While all of this means that it is possible for talented individuals to create and distribute their music for very little cost, it also opens the doors for less talented people to basically fool people into thinking they are more talented then they actually are.Through the use of sampled instruments that can be programed by computer to play whatever they want perfectly possible to the use of things such as auto-tune and digital editing software, it is literally possible for ANYONE to produce a recording that sounds quite good with little to no musical talent.

What are your thoughts on what I will call “performance enhanced” music?Is it acceptable for performers to present via recordings performances that they can’t actually do live?Do you think that the price paid for tickets is justified for performers that have a documented track record for lip-syncing or secretly using things like auto-tune (T-Pain doesn’t count)?

NOTE:What we are talking about are musicians who present themselves performing on a recording when in actuality their performance has been meticulously edited to make it seem better than it is.This does not include artists in electronic media such as Square Pusher or Daft Punk who are creating compositions with using computers.
