The Empress Painting

I chose a painting artifact which is a self-portrait who names Wu Zetian, the first woman emperor.  I chose this artifact because it is a painting my mom and dad’s favorite, and they told me who she is when I was really young.  This impact me a lot and a long time.

Since I am a Chinese. Tang Dynasty has a significant meaning for us.  This represents women status became higher, and women started becoming important in the society.  In my experience, today’s society of China is an equal and democratic country, and I think Tang dynasty paved the way for today.  It is not only just surprised me but also surprised all the people around the world who know this empress.  She is the only woman in Chinese history to assume the title of Empress Regnant and became the ruler of China in the late seventh century.  When I was in the high school, my school asked us to done a project about culture.  I first came up with this painting, and as my group finished, we achieved the 1st place and the whole project is still placing in the history classroom.  It made me very proud and since then, this artifact treasures my memory.

As I said, I used this artifact for my high school project, but I don’t think there are many people have this painting.  Some collectors may have, but may not the same as mine.  Because this is a historical collection; nowadays, few people will care about these collections although it has significant meaning for country.  I hope this artifact could be given to my children, and let it continues to represent our culture.  Interestingly, upon hindsight today, despite her faults, many historians view her to had been a capable and attentive leader on the whole.

The emperor Wu Zetian, who is the only woman known as emperor in china’s history, was ascend the throne, the era became the most pen and enlightened time period for all the women. She led the Imperial household to issue many amendments like “WU JU”, “DIAN SHI”and some others new kind of examination. These amendment all reflect the rights for women. Also the women could go outside to have activities such as ridding horses, which allowed women to wear men’s clothes. Women during Tang Dynasty, also could have much more dominant right to remarry, divorce and were not described as birth tools any more. During her reign, Empress Wu placed Buddhism over Daoism as the favored state religion. She invited the most gifted scholars to China and built Buddhist temples and cave sculptures. Chinese Buddhism achieved its highest development under the reign of Wu Zetian.

During Tang Dynasty especially the 690 which was the period of Wu. After Empress Wu had taken the throne, and she became the ruler of the Kingdom of China following her husband Emperor Gaozong of Tang’s death. Wu Zetian (Wu Tse-tien) was the most powerful woman in Chinese history. She is the only woman to rule China in her own right. Wu extended women’s rights in various aspects with her supreme power of the country. Under Empress Wu’s effort on improving women’s status, such as allowing females to enter the “government system”, which preciously only men could, women in Tang lived a more convenient social environment. This has a dramatic impact on women’s position later in Chinese history, which has a magnificent contribution towards the eventual gender equality in modern society in China.

Long time before the Tang dynasty, the women have much lower level during their history period. Very close to Tang, there is a Dynasty those little years before. SUI Dynasty is very close period to Tang and they are almost very similar and matched in many ways. And their responsibilities are almost full in their lives but not their rights. The women in Tang Dynasty cannot go to school or education; always be considered is marriage and having baby.

Tang has the relatively open and humanity social type not only for women’s rights, but also for their responsibilities. Also, there are many women gained a lot of attention and rights, such as the high-ranked imperial Yang Yuhuan, is the most beautiful women during this era. She influenced many big decisions of her husband, the emperor. So that the emperor sent a dance "Rainbow Skirt and Feather Garment song". And after, a very big change, an emperor who named Wu Zetian ------ The most powerful and the only women ------ firstly got the throne in history.

The women could be a part of the government and became the governors, e.g SHANG GUAN, which were the same as the men. And SHANGGUAN made the women’s status get higher and higher step by step. In addition, Empress Wu led people believe in another religion, which from Taoism to Buddhism. And according Wu’S colorful life, she also let her rights reached to the top. She had a lot of lovers that was impossible before for a woman! So that these led the improvement of the rights and status of women in Tang.

Gradually, women gained more rights and correct treatment during this period:

  •  Have the freedom of speech and they would not be discriminated by the gender issue.
  •  Improved women’s status.
  •  No longer only for the tools of giving birth.
  •  Women became more confident and brave in Tang.

For longterm influences:

  •  With women’s efforts, people in china become open-minded.
  •  Contribute to the equality of gender.
  •  Inspired the women to continued to struggle and receive the right or themselves.
  •  Growing up in a free, fulfilling environment.

Wu is not only the female hero, but also helped women developing themselves from under level.

Today, most historians admit that her ruthlessness and cruelty were no worse than those of male emperors at the time. She has simply been the victim of double standards, reinforced by the sexism of the Confucian beliefs followed by official Chinese historians over the centuries.
