McCormick Place in Chicago Illinois has been selected to host the largest most comprehensive lighting exhibit and conference ever held in the United States. This conference which is known as the International Lighting Expo will be held on June 14-16 2012 and is expected to draw more than a thousand participants. “This will be the first such conference ever held in the United States” noted the program chair Dave Kaplan “and we also intend for it to be the best.”

Exhibitors are invited to enter their best new lighting products for judging in the “Best of Show” competition and all lighting companies are invited to compete for the “Energy Miser” awards. Entries for each award will be evaluated by an international panel of lighting experts and will be awarded at the closing session of the three-day conference.

The purpose of this message Ms. Allison is to inquire whether your company would be interested in supplying a speaker for one of the sessions. Although your company would be responsible for all expenses we will supply a coordinator overhead projector and screen for each session. We can in addition provide other reasonable accommodations if arrangements are made in advance. If you would be interested in participating please call me at 555-1038 to discuss the details of your sponsorship of this important industry event.

Urban Systems have just introduced WiteLite, an ultraviolet filtered, full-spectrum light source that combats Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a type of depression caused by the decrease of daylight during the fall and winter months. Marc Kaplan of Urban Systems announced the new product yesterday and disclosed that the disorder affects himself and ten million other Americans.

The winter months can leave people starving for daylight. With just ten hours of sunlight possible each day for residents in the northern half of the country. The darkness can become overwhelming for some people, it can drive them to clinical depression.

The symptoms of the disorder isn’t all that different from clinical depression, except that they are seasonal. Although depression is the more serious symptom, other symptoms include lethargy, a desire to sleep longer, diminished libido, seasonal weight gain, social withdrawal, mood changes, and anxiety.

A possible symptom students might suffer is a severe change in their grades during winter months. If a student was to flunk their classes in winter when they normally get high grades at other times of the year, SAD may be playing a part. Students, in fact, are the type of sufferers whom are least likely to seek treatment.

The main treatment for the disorder is straightforward. Either light therapy
or more hours of direct sunlight is needed to alleviate the symptoms. Experts warn
that there is numerous dangers involved in self-diagnosis. None of the serious
symptoms is likely to be treated successfully without professional help.

Mr. Kaplan indicated that questions about WiteLite can be addressed to Urban Systems or to he directly at 313-555-6080.

From the northeastern states to the south, lighting is a major component of educational cost that often is taken for granted, except when it comes to energy bills. Lighting upgrades can result in an average return on investment of forty percent. 2 years is the average payback period.

According to the Dept. of Energy, lighting in institutional facilitys can consume up to one-third of a building's total energy cost. A common upgrade is the replacment of old lamps and magnetic ballasts with new lamps and electronic ballasts. According to D. J. Hill, CPA. and Vice President of Business Affairs at Nordonia high school in Macedonia, Oh., “when we made the upgrade, we immediately realized a savings of $30,000 a year in energy costs, which we then put directly into the classroom.” The School System’s energy-savings program are detailed in table 3 on Page 45 of the May 10th issue of the Business Of Education Magazine.

El Paso community college installed more than 11,700 electronic ballasts on 3 campusses as replacements for existing magnetic ballasts. The projected payback of the $234,000 cost is calculated to be less than two and one-half years.

The cost-savings aspect of occupancy sensors was demonstrated by Des Moines Area community college, which turned on its new sensors at 7 am and turned them off at 11 pm. The upgrade cost the college $23,800 in materiels and labor and resulted in an energy savings of $11,500 per year.

A major educational campaign is under way to prommote dimming, even though most designers are not using flourescent lamps with a dimming range as low as eight percent. 2 recent developments, however, have broadened the range of possibilities for designers—compact fluorescent lamps and electronic ballasts.

The national dimming institute, made up of leading electrical mfrs, seeks to increase awareness of the benefits of lighting controls. The group’s education 101 program has released a C.D.-R.O.M. that will be widely distributed.

Advanced Lighting Concepts started the group. In a recent Illuminating Engineering Society newsletter artical entitled “I am dim,” Dr Steve Purdy, 1 of the group’s founders and the company's Director of Sales, noted, “we intend for this new organization to mount a national educational outreach program.”

Meetings have been schedualed for different regions of the country, especially in the northeast, to inform the design community about the many options available.

Not too many years ago, computers were something of an office novelty, most office workers then performed one major visual task the reading of black characters printed on white paper laid flat or nearly flat on a desk.

Office workers now spend there days looking into a monitor who’s screen is almost perpendicular to the desk. Some screens still display low-contrast green characters on a dark background. The higher the contrast, the easier faster and more accurately aworker can perform their visual tasks.

While the electric illumination produced by a buildings system may be ideal for performing paper tasks they could create conditions inappropriate for computer-based tasks. Managers must recognize that office lighting have many qualities but the differences aren't apparent in a cursory survey of the work area.

Glare creates visual discomfort. Which is often subtle, due to your eyes amazing ability to except relatively-poor viewing conditions. Tiny ocular muscles react to lighting and causes the eyes to adapt, minimizing viewing problems. Long term viewing problems however cause these muscles to become strained. These conditions can make the workplace far less hospitable, and can have a damaging affect on productivity and moral. In addition, a productivity loss of one percent in a payroll of $1,000,000.00 costs the company $10000 annually.

Dear Ms. Allison:

During your remodeling planning think about the amount of natural light in each room the use you make of the room and the layout of it’s furniture. Then consider what quality of light you need and where you need it—bright economical fluorescent tubes or low level standard bulbs.

A combination of different lighting types give enormous variety. Spotlights or a ceiling pendant are quite affective. You will also need atmospheric lighting, don’t however overdo levels of light. You don’t want to feel as if your living in a lamp shop; and if their are too many lights pointed downward, a room can feel flat. In addition fluorescent strips are unflattering in bathrooms, go for tungsten bulbs instead.

Flexibility is everything so always choose the easy solution. Which is generally also the most economical solution.

Thank you Ms. Allison for this opportunity to introduce some of urban systems quality products. Please stop by our showroom any weekday from eight a.m. until five p.m. for help in “lighting up your life.

Sincerly,

Rita Gonzales of Santa Fe, New Mexico, wants to know this I've heard that replacing my old fashioned bulbs with compact fluorescents will save $50 per bulb and reduce global warming. Will this type of bulb create that drab, corpselike appearance in everybodys home?

The answer is that modern fluorescent bulbs produce excellent color quality rather than the drab bluish hue of older ones. I use them exclusively in my own home no one has checked my pulse lately to see if I am still breathing. To quote Jim Dulley in Cut Those Bills, published in the Dallas Morning News, You can lose the blues and still cut costs.

There are decorative globe, bullet, candelabra, and bent tube designs and recessed, task, and spot lighting will focus the light where you need it. Fluorescent lightings main advantage is its economy. Fifty five dollars is the typical

annual savings on homeowners utility bills.

For more information, contact the Industry Conservation Council at 317-555-8016 and ask for George Mandrake, energy analyst Betty Bow, economist or Bob Onwood, staff analyst.

After a hundred years, you could of assumed that there would be nothing new to say about the flashlight. With a bulb, batteries, and tube, it’s function hasn't changed much. However, you should not imply that the flashlight itself hasn’t changed.

Today's flashlights are smaller and lighter than the one invented in 1898. Irregardless of the fact that it hasn't changed much in function, its form is now different than earlier versions.

Sure, part of the flashlight's evolution lays in commercialism, but it also stems from childhood memories. You can't repeat these memories, but you can create new ones to compliment them. Some of the new flashlights are already on the market; others are eminent.

Remember the watch who’s tiny built-in flashlight lets you tell the time in the dark? The next generation is a nightlight and clock, in case your really interested in the time when you visit the john.

In principal, a bendable flashlight is a traditional flashlight, but it also fastens to the forehead or hangs over your neck so that you don’t loose your place when reading. A musical version lets any one keep two of life's necessities at hand.

Finally, there is a flashlight designed to combat Seasonal Affective Disorder, in which insufficient light effects a person’s personality; it turns your entire pillow into a reading lamp.

With 14,000 professionals registered, Lightfair International has won its bet that Las Vegas would be a good location for its trade show for architectural lighting. Not only is Vegas one of the top trade show cities in the world. But its streets simply shimmer with billions of bright lights. This show is the biggest of the two international lighting shows planned this year. In fact, if it wasn’t for the competing smaller regional shows, this would be the largest lighting show ever held.

The conference program at this and similar shows offer light designers and architects a chance to earn continuing education credits. None of the sessions are to be repeated, and neither tape recorders nor videotaping are allowed in any session.

One highlight of the show is a presentation by Luc Lafortune, lighting director for the Cirque du Soleil, Lightfair also has organized a group trip to see the Cirque du Soleil's permanent Las Vegas show. Lafortune is always a lively speaker; and at

last year’s show, it was him who provided a look at the challenges of lighting the dangerous feats of circus performers.

There are, for the first time, one session featuring lighting designers who will address the issues of adapting theatrical fixtures for permanent installations. Walt Disney Imagineering is also providing a look at lighting for their themed environments.

Lighting designers Charles Stone from London and Rogier Heide from Amsterdam takes a look into the crystal ball of lighting for a preview of the future. Stone and him will also answer audience questions. Finally, the great Paul Gregory himself talks about project managementin a global market.

Even on the brightest of evenings navigating your garden can be a challenge at best. At worst, the cause of a nasty spill. Today, alot of people are discovering the benifits of low voltage lighting as an economical effective and energy-efficient source of exterior lighting.

Many Lighting Systems are sold in kits for do-it-yourself installation, many folks who would’nt otherwise fool with an electrical outlet is now installing a lighting system.

Essentially, there is only 3 basic types of fixtures spot lighting, path lighting, and general lighting.  Spot lighting consist of a floodlight that is used to direct light to a specific location so as to illuminate a tree, decorative shrub, or architectural element of the homes exterior. Path lighting and accent lighting is the most popular styles used by homeowners’ today.

One aspect of design that deserves creative ideas are the maximum distance that the wire will travel. The further the wire travels, the more the voltage drops. Which, in turn, creates a drop in illumination. To avoid this condition experts advice using several wires of varying lengths.

Some transformers are equiped with a photoelectric cell that automatically turn the lights on and off. Another poplar accessory is a dimmer to control the lights’ intensity.
