My Learning Experience

Learning is a lifetime process which never ends. My learning experience so far has been great and worthwhile based on the mistakes I have made and the experience I have earned to date. One of the main factors that has developed and molded me is the passion for what I love and being fearless of pursuing my dreams. I attribute this noble virtue to the experiences I have had from young age especially with my father. I base my story on one of the greatest events that shaped my life and continue to do so even as I pursue my college education. This is my first swimming lessons.

When I was eleven years old, my family moved to Shanghai and my father rented an apartment which had a swimming club at the first floor. Our house was in the second floor. I always admired my father and looked to him as a role model and mentor. My father was a renowned scholar and had contributed a lot in the field of psychology. He loved his job very much that most of his free time was spent locked in his library, either contemplating on new theories of childhood development or criticizing the earlier theories. Whenever he set his mind on a particular task, he commanded total concentration and thorough work to yield his expected results and objectives. He loved what he did and performed every task of his work with relentless passion.

At eleven, in a new town and beginning of a complicated adolescence where many children lost way in their lives, I had to create something for my life. My father always said that I just needed a little concentration and passion. Since many people attended the swimming club at the first floor of the building, I felt I needed to learn something that would make me independent and proud. I decided to take an attempt at the swimming sport. I asked my father to enroll me to the swimming club and he surely did not hesitate.

I started my swimming lessons promptly by utilizing an hour or two after school. I was very afraid of the water. Even in the house, getting into a jacuzzi or bath tab was an issue. Cold water was essentially an enemy to me. The instructor at the swimming club was not a patient man and he had little patience on forcing the beginners into getting into the pool. I wonder why they hired him in the first place. The initial one month was spent hiding at the pool end, afraid of getting into the pool. Many of the swimming beginners had already adapted to the swimming lessons and were making progress. I merely made a few friends there since I was a laughing stalk as a “timid girl”.

When the situation got out of hand, I decided to seek help from my father. I knew he was a good swimmer although I have never seen him swim. Sometimes I heard him tell my mother that he sometimes took some time to swim at the university pool. He was a professor of psychology as I mentioned and had a position in the university. He agreed to teach me himself.

The first lesson he taught me was to discard the fear and love the water. As much as I tried to embrace his advice, I found myself stiff and fearful of the water. He physically pulled me into the pool and made me feel the water and love the ripples as they spread with every movement; the splash of the water and the smell of chlorine in the warm pool. It was actually exciting. The next lesson he made was to embrace the water. My father always said that personifying the water and taking it as a friend would relieve all the fear and promote a sense of attachment. He literally made me hug the water as if it was a person. Very funny.

When we got home he encouraged me to continue with such motivation and positive mind. The following day, I joined my other friends who I had made at school and neighborhood, at the pool. The instructor smiled at me for the first time. With much courage and practice, I became a good swimmer in a months’ time. I could do back strokes and butterfly moves by this time. I developed an interest in swimming and decided that it would be my sporting activity for life. I developed intense love for the pool and spent most of my free time there. Since my elementary school had no swimming pool, my friends came to the swimming club to swim, interact, play and even bond.

After graduation, I joined high school and enrolled for the school’s swimming club. I had never participated in any swimming competition before and this was an opportunity for me. Just because I was a good swimmer, I did not see the need to take part in intense training with the other swimmers. I was a junior student and the coach was not very strict. During the inter-school competitions, I performed dismally, coming almost last in all the different cadres of races. I felt humiliated because I had initially bragged on my prowess in swimming.

My father was always there to offer life tips to me. He encouraged me to take some time in the evening to train with the team at school and also at home at the club. He even hired a personal coach for me, who paid attention to my weaknesses and perfected them. The following competitions at school were a walk over for me and I performed well. Over the years in high school I won many competitions and trophies for the school and myself. Now I am in the United States to further my studies. I still find time to swim despite the busy schedule.

My life story represents the typical young person’s life from childhood. It has nothing special since many go through the same difficulties and challenges. It is a lesson from failure and slow steady development of skills. The uniqueness in it is that I am the one who experienced it first hand and has taught me a lot about life. First, I have learnt to love with immense passion things that I want in life. Everything that I want to pursue, I do it passionately. I have also learnt to mask the fear or shying off from trying new things due to fear of failure or ridicule. I can try anything I want without fearing any criticism and ridicule. Swimming has also taught me to work hard, manage my time well and prioritize on the most important things. I intend to continue with the same spirit in my career and life after school.

This learning experience can be reciprocated to other people’s lives in a positive way. My classmates can borrow a leaf from my story and become better students and citizens. They can learn to love what they do and pursue it fearlessly to the end. The fruits of hard work are sweet. I implore them to scrutinize their lives and make decisions that are of importance to them.
